Mengya Zhao – Artist Biography
Mengya Zhao is a multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, BC, whose work spans ceramics, printmaking, graphic design, and illustration. With a creative practice that is both whimsical and deeply thoughtful, Mengya brings a playful yet refined sensibility to everything she creates—whether it’s a hand-thrown porcelain sculpture, a screen-printed zine, or an immersive public installation.
Born with a keen eye for detail and a love of storytelling, her work often explores the absurdities and poetic moments of everyday life. Rooted in both traditional craft and contemporary design, Mengya's pieces invite viewers to reimagine the familiar through a surreal, curious, and culturally layered lens.
Since 2017, Mengya has participated in dozens of exhibitions and residencies across Canada, the United States, Mexico, Belgium, Germany, and the UK. Her ceramic work and public art installations have been shown at institutions such as the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and the Cultural Center of Andenne in Belgium. In 2025, she received the Emma Award from Britannia Art Gallery and her work was added to the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.
Her recent residencies include Medalta in the Historic Clay District, Höchster Porzellan-Manufaktur in Germany, and Radio28cs in Mexico City, where she continues to expand her practice through experimentation with form, material, and narrative.
